A few years ago when my children were younger, I used to worry about staying in a "nice" hotel because the kids might stain the carpet or upholstery or break/chip something else. No need to worry here. Chances are that whatever it is, it's already been stained, chipped or broken at least once.

We all know the Embassy Suites formula. An atrium with large 2-room suites all around the perimiter. The rooms have one or two beds in the bedroom, a living room with a sleeper couch and a pseudo-kitchenette with a wet bar, fridge and microwave. Full breakfast in the morning and a "manager's reception" at the better ones in the evening. Personally, I love the formula for both business and personal travel, but from time to time once needs to renovate. It's time here.

I stayed overnight with my family recently because of Useless Airways' inability to make connecting flights connect, so all I saw were the rooms (we had three in total) and the breakfast. Bottom line -- Breakfast good. Rooms, not so much. Each of the rooms were relatively clean (an unemptied waste basket in one gave me pause), but "well lived in." In other words, I wouldn't lie naked on top of the bedspread, not even on a dare.

Partially compensating for the rooms, the staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Both the night and morning front desk managers went out of their way to soothe the stress of nine very aggravated travelers. As well, the morning shuttle driver went above and beyond the call of duty.

Paid $119 per night as a "distressed traveler," which is alright for a business rate. Travelling on my own nickel, however, I would not pay more than $89 for a room, and only if the Holiday Inn Express were booked solid.

Bottom line -- if you need to stay by the airport, this place is tolerable, but I have to assume that there are better digs close by for any sort of extended stay. If they take and renovate the place to mainline Embassy Suites standards, as is sorely needed, I would be happy to stay here again on the strength of the helpful staff.

I truly enjoyed our stay at this well maintained hotel. The staff was friendly, helpful and professional. The room was clean, odor free and well appointed. Family friendly establishment. Great breakfast and nice Manager's Reception. I would definitely go back!

We arrived on Friday August 10th. Immediately we were told that the water would be off in our suite the following day for a period of an hour at 11:00 am. Not horrible but it did make us rearrange our plans for the next day. When we got to our room, the TV in the living room area did not work and the night latch on the door was ripped off and hanging by one screw. Maintenace came and fixed those problems. The pool was closed for renovations but we were not told about this at all until we went down and saw the sign on the door. Saturday and Sunday morning, both, we were awaken at 8 am by hammering and drilling either from above us or the stairwell beside us. It continued, continuously, for several hours. Twice, when returning to our room (we stayed for two nights) our key cards, both mine and my husbands, would not open our room. The final straw came when checking out on Sunday, 08/12/07, the license plate had been stolen off our vehicle. I went inside and told the clerk and she said 'usually when that happens....." like it was a common occurence. I asked to use the phone to call the police and the clerk rolled her eyes at me. I thought it important to report it since I was from out of state. This hotel is not at all what we expected from an Embassy Suites, it was run down and not at all on the level of others we had stayed at before. We will never stay at this particular location again and will seriously consider skipping the Embassy brand all together in the future after the attitude of the staff and conditions at this location.

We got there at 5:00pm and were told they didn't know if they had any rooms. By the way we did have reservations. We were then told to wait for 30 minutes before checking in. The carpet in the room needed to be replaced, it was worn and dirty. There was plastic hanging from the ceiling in the pool area, I guess they had a leaking problem. I would not recommend this hotel.

We also stayed at the Embassy on "Race Day" during the Memorial Day weekend. There was no problem with check-in. Our room was ready once we arrived and we called ahead for an early morning check-in since we didn't arrive the night before as reserved. Our room was great and spacious as usual. I love the fact that there are plenty of towels/washcloths to us. The breakfast buffet was delightful and plentiful. And we even order room service which arrive in no time! Presentation is the key and they know how to do that! Check-out was great and fast even with race day and 2 weddings that weekend there at the hotel. They never missed a beat! I've always stayed at the Embassy when I come to Charlotte if I'm not staying with family members and everytime is a relaxing treat!
