Spent a night at the Wingate Inn Charlotte Airport after spending a long day and evening at Lowe's Motor Speedway enduring the Bank of America 500. (My wife is, inexplicably, a NASCAR fan...I got free tix to luxury suite; it's the only to if you must see a race, as far as I'm concerned).
Although we didn't check-in until very late, our room was available without a hitch. When i ran down to the car to grab an item we forgot, I heard a female voice shrieking from the darkness. I mentioned it to the desk clerk who seemed completely disinterested; apparently it happens all the time. That being said, there are surveillance cameras monitoring the WIngate parking which give some sense of security.
Our room was large, clean and remarkably smell-free, considering it was a smoking room...wifey smokes like a chimney. It had a fridge, a small microwave, and coffee maker.
The king bed was fabulously comfy. The AC was cold, albeit a bit on the noisy side. Water pressure was lovely, and the shower had a curved shower curtain rod (only reporting it because some people find it important...I don't understand the thrill myself). Despite the close proximity to the Interstate, the hotel seemed quiet. The only thing I heard inside the hotel was the ringing in my ears from the noise at the track.
There is a small but adequate fitness center with a very clean spa tub. Each floor has a small area with ice and vending machines.
Location is very near near I85. The hotel is completely visible from Little Rock Rd, but the entrance to it is about 600' west of the hotel, on a frontage road. The turn is easy to miss at night., I drove past it twice...I'll blame it on the race.
Because it was "Race Weekend," the hotel rate skyrocketed 125% from $80 to $180/night. I understand the laws of supply and demand, and the Wingate wasn't the only hotel who raised its rates, but I still feel the gouge marks on my wallet.
At the regular $80 rate, the Wingate Charlotte Airport is a quality value. At $180, it is overpriced.
