Good hotel near downtown. Food was reasonably good in the restaurant.
After staying in "proper" Hiltons and Hyatts, I was a little dubious of the Doubletree, but it was near my client's office. And the rooms were definitely lower end than Hilton-branded properties although still very well appointed (but with extremely loud air conditioning units!). Nothing wrong with the rooms....just a little dated.
What makes me give this hotel four stars is the service. From the second we hit check in we were greeted with super service from Adam (didn't mind the delicious chocolate chip cookie either!) and very good advice on local amenities. Because we arrived on a Sunday, we ate in the hotel as most uptown restaurants were closed - and we weren't sorry we did. The food was reasonably priced, plentiful, healthy, special orders were no trouble and the delightful Faith, our waitress, made us very welcome.
On the second night, I was working in the business centre to get out of my room for a while, when the computer crashed and I lost the work I was doing. I was quite angry, but I couldn't have asked for a better staff response. The front desk manager, Chellie, immediately waived the in-room internet charge and sent up a voucher for free room service appetisers for my colleague and I who were going to have to work late as a result of the error.
I'm probably more of a big hotel girl when I'm travelling for business, but I'd stay here again. The staff really did make the difference in what probably would have been an otherwise unremarkably (but perfectly acceptable) stay. They're aiming for 10s, as their current campaign says. I think they're achieving them.

We chose this hotel because we wanted to stay in the city of Charlotte, but for as inexpensively as possible. This hotel fit the bill as we were able to get a good deal on priceline.
The hotel is on the edge of the city, but Charlotte's downtown is small so to get to where the restaurants and bars are located you will only have a short 10-15 minute walk. It is also right off Rt. 77 so to travel to other parts of the city by car is easy.
The rooms were clean and the cookies are very good. The elevators are really slow, but it wouldn't prevent me from staying there again. If you are checking out Johnson & Wales, I would stay here, it's right next door.

My husband and I stay here everytime we go watch the Carolina Panthers play at home. This year they offered a football fan rate where we got free breakfast, free parking, coozies, and seat cushions. It was a great deal, seeing as you can walk to the stadium and don't have to worry about driving there. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, and the cookies keep us coming back. We've tried other options, but always prefer the Doubletree.
We strolled down the street this past trip to a trendy little bar/restaurant. I belive it was callen town. Cute place, nice bartender.
I recommend the Doubletree. It is convenient to where we travel in Charlotte and easy to navigate.
I was less than satisfied at my recent stay at the DoubleTree Gateway Village.
The room was clean and bed was comfortable, but...
Food via room service was terrible. Service was fine, but food quality was bad. I'm usually a guy that stays in his room and does room service nightly, but the food here forced me to explore the town and sample the restaurants.
Room keys frequently lose their programming. EVERYDAY, when returning to my room, my room key failed to unlock my door. I had to walk all the way back to the elevator (I was at the end of the hall - which frustrated me even more) and go down to the front desk to reprogram it. By the third day, they said "yeah, they are bad. You have to keep them away from your cell phone and credit cards." Would've been nice to know from the start. So the fourth day I kept the key completely separate in my jacket breast pocket. I return to my room - and it doesn't work. Grrrrrrr...
Internet service was horrible. I am a very technical person, so take this to heart. The service was spotty and slooooow. I frequently experienced disconnects in AIM and downloads took forever. Not good for $9.95 for 24 hours.
Only stay here if you need this general location. It is about a mile from the town center and there is a free bus service (Red Line) that takes you up through town.
Hope this helps.
