Read the previous reviews and was skeptical of location. Even went so far as to check out availability at other Marriotts. But was pleasantly surprised. We checked in around lunch time and were granted an upgrade to a penthouse room.
We explained to the Staff that USAirways had "lost" my wife's luggage and they would hopefully be delivering it to the hotel. We gave cell number and requested they call us when it came in. (We made the same request of USAirways - total waste of breath). The room was awesome - seemed to be freshly painted and every feature was excellent! The Staff contacted us while we were at dinner to advise the luggage had arrived. And although we identifed the bag, the Manager was sharp enough to demand photo ID before releasing the bag.
The breakfast service was excellent, housekeeping was never intrusive and serviced the room each day while we were out. The Staff - especially Scott - were very helpful and exceeded our expectations.
Be aware you are near a major north-south highway (I-77) so while this is really convenient, you may experience some road noise if you're close to the highway.
Excellent property - Great Staff - we couldn't have asked for more during our 4 day stay. Many THANKS to the Tyvola Residence Inn - we'll be back!!

All I can say about some of the negative reviews is... "Wow, where did you really stay?" I have stayed at the Residence Inn, South many times in the past 2 years. I think I have over 150 nights at that location alone, and I have never had a bad experience to date. I have stayed in each of the room types: the Penthouse Suite, the studio suites and the one and two bedroom suites. This particular location is considered my home away from home. I simply love the rooms, from the fireplace in the winter, to the fully stocked kitchen (all cooking needs, pots, pans, dinnerware, etc.), to the pool and cookout area in the spring and summer. The rooms are exceptionally clean every time I stay, and I have never had a problem with the management or staff.

The rooms are comfortable, the beds are clean and fresh, and if I had a complaint it would be that the many many pillows make me not want to get out of bed in the mornings. The housekeeping staff is very efficient and friendly. They have gone out of their way many times for me when I was running late or had a special need. The front desk staff and management really make me feel welcome, and took the time early on to remember my name.

I absolutely recommend this hotel to any traveller passing through Charlotte, or even someone needing an extended stay location that will pamper you. The breakfast each day is good and the manager's reception in the evenings really add a personal touch to the stay. As an extensive traveller (198 days this year alone in hotels) I can say this is one of the best hotels in which I stay, and by far my favorite of any that I have stayed with to date.

This Hotel is Horrible! They claim to have recently updated it, but they haven't. We stayed in the 2 story penthouse suite, what a joke! The bathroom upstairs had black mold where grout was supposed to be, so the tiles could actually be lifted off. And there were HUGE cockroaches everywhere. They were about 3 inches long and crawling on the walls, in the bathrooms, the kitchen, it was disgusting! Do NOT stay here!

Just returned from Charlotte, where I stayed one night at the Residence Inn. I chose the hotel based on other reviews and the management response as posted on Tripadvisor.

I travel frequently for business and am a Marriott Gold member and a Hilton Diamond member. Thus I have stayed in many hotels and usually have a good experience at Marriott properties.

Unfortunately, my experience here was not good. I was in one of the "newly remodeled" penthouse suites. The suite looked overall tired and was dirty. I found a dirty fork on the TV stand. When I went to take a shower in the morning, I found many black hairs inside the tub and shower curtain - EEW. The carpeting was sticky in several places and caused me to feel very uncomfortable walking around barefoot.

Sheets on bed did not fit properly. Fitted sheet was too small for bed and only covered about 1/2 the sides of the mattress. Pillows were a mix of new and old. Old pillows were rock hard.

Although it was obvious that the unit had been somewhat remodeled with newer paint and bathroom counters. The kitchen was tired. Counters were "repaired", range looked to be from about 1984 and was very worn, cabinets were banged up and refrigerator was dented.

Remote control to TV did not work and needed batteries.

Entire unit had odd odor - slight mildew smell.

Seemed to be missing furniture. Lower level bedroom had nothing but a small desk in it. Was a large room - usually there is another table or chair in this space - seemed odd to see this big empty room.

Normally I would have requested a different suite or moved to another hotel. However, I arrived late after working all day and was just too tired to deal with the hassle of moving.

Please note that although this is a convenient area - it is very close to freeway. Lots of road noise - not only here but also at the Marriott and the Hilton where I have previously stayed before.

Although I usually like the extra space and "homey" feel of the Residence Inns - I will not be back to this one.
