Hi folks. I'm new to the board. I am looking for some local Charlotte-area help. My family (myself, my wife and our 6 yr.old son) are going to be in the area during the week of Aug.14/05. We have booked a room @ the Days Inn on Sugar Creek (I 85 Exit 41) in the University area. My wife read only 1 review about the hotel; it was on Yahoo. It was a bad review that stated: "Don't stay here.....bad area". I also know that there is a Comfort Inn and a Motel 6 nearby.

My question is: is that area/part of town rough? We are taking a 4 day "mini" vacation mainly for my son. He is an avid NASCAR fan (at 6 yrs. old!) and he wants to see DEI, Hendrick, Roush etc.

I really don't want to switch hotels...but please give me your advice.

thanks,

ilovetheusa

Do not stay in that area!! I would stay at the Hilton in the University area or any of the hotels in the Concord Mills area. There is a Sleep Inn, Hampton Inn, Spring Hill Suites (Marriott), Wingate Inn and a Confort Suites all near Concord Mills. The Hampton Inn is on Speedway Blvd, and votes the best small hotel in the area. If you aren't familiar with Concord Mills, it is a huge outlet shopping mall, that is the #1 tourist attraction in NC. Lots to do there. You can go to their website at concordmills.com

I agree- do not stay on Sugar Creek Rd - crime, drugs, etc... go back toward the University - many good choices there on Highway 29 or Harris Blvd. near University Hospital.

Thanks folks. I appreciate your opinions and advice. We've previously stayed @ the Hampton Inn, Weddington/Speedway; but we not able to get a reservation there this time around. I was able to get a reservation @ the Sleep Inn in the immediate area (Exit 49/Gateway Blvd.). We are extremely happy.

Two years ago we stayed at the Sleep Inn @ Exit 36/Mooresville-a nice hotel chain. Our main concern was returning to our hotel after dark.....the last thing that I wanted was to be in a non-tourist, unsafe area.

I admit, I wanted to "save a buck" by staying @ the Days Inn. My wife now has "I told you so" bragging rights!

Thanks Again!

ilovetheusa.

Sugar Creek area is scary! Hotels by Concord Mills (all new) are nice and good area, close to speedway. Huntersville/Lake Norman area is very nice also (near the Lake and Birkdale Village). Huntersville/Lake Norman area closer to the race teams in Mooresville.
