My husband and I are doing a road trip driving from Washington D.C. to Louisiana later this month and want to spend a night in a reasonably priced hotel in the Charlotte area with restaurants and bars nearby. Have read some reports on Trip Advisor about certain areas being unsafe to walk around at night which is making us feel a little apprehensive about staying there. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Are you coming in on I-85 or I-77?

I suggest you stop in the Huntersville/Cornelius area just north of Charlotte. The closer you get to the city, the worse the neighborhoods become. Best wishes.

Stop north of exit 18 or cross into SC and stay at exit 82B. There are several restuarants in that area and some decently priced motels. There is no place I would stay off 77 between exit 18 and the sc boarder. There are nice hotels along the route but the areas are very questionable.

I forgot to say if you stay in Rock Hill you will be south of rush hour. Going from the lake norman area to the sc line can take over an hour of bumper to bumper driving. This is a good thing to avoid.
